Sutherland was being taken into the boat Mr. Edward Wild, second officer of the 5. S. "Lydia" who had just come on board the "Hulchow" by the second boat, divested himself of his clothes and plunged into the sea. With splendid pluck and
determination, he towed the buoy and line until almost 35 when the backwash on the line tore it from his grasp. He made fathoms from the ship, (several attempté, to recover it, but without success and was compelled with his remaining strength to swim for the boat. He reached it only just in time, thoroughly exhausted, and was with difficulty hauled on board. Both at- -tempts were made with admirable pluck and determination and both lives were for some time in most imminent peril. The "Huichow" was under weigh as soon as possible and after some manoeuvring in the heavy sea running, finally picked up the boats crew about three miles South of the original position. All the crew were saved and brought on to Hongkong. I have brought these particulars to your notice hoping that you will be pleased to lay them before those authorities, who are over ready to recognise such acts of undoubted bravery. All the circumstances herein detailed were witnessed by the Gentlemen whose signatures are affixed below.
